Ok so I know there was a post not long ago about spoiled rich brats. Now I'm beginning to wonder if I am one xD.While my parents do pay for more or less everything (insurance for my car, college, and the bills) I can honestly say I've never been deprived of material things.Starting college.. I'm going to have to commute at least 45 minutes to an hour daily. Now.. I will be the first to say I'm lazy... I was lucky enough to schedule my classes to be round 9 or 10 so I don't have to get up at 5. However, they are monday threw friday. My mom (who has more then enough money to) doens't want to shell out for a dorm becase they are "so expensive" and I "might not need one next semister". However, I think thats bs.I'm taking 18 credit hours.. plus driving there and back is another 10 hours weekly thats 28 hours.. I will probably end up reading at least 10 hours (cause half the work of college is done at home... to my knowledge). And ontop of all that I will have my job.I have no desire to quit my job. I do my best to save every penny I get.. My father once suggested putting ALL my money I get into savings an mooching.. I am not going to tell him this but, I refuse to do that. So between college which is already a full job.. and attempting to work I kinda feel like I should just drop my job.. I kinda don't see having any free time to actually do anything I might want to do..At first.. it shocked me that I could actually be moving out this year.. having to cook for myself, clean and all the other meanial task which are accompanied with not having someone at home 24/7 to do those things. Then I kinda realised I made some new friends and I really don't have any friends living around me currently.. and it will be harder on me going back and forth because there I have friends. here I don't.. meaning I won't get to hang out with friends plus my ability to date will be severely limited..If I date someone there I will only be up there a little while at a time during the week.. if I date someone here.. I have to deal with the constant thought that sooner or later I probably will in fact move up to the dorm.So I dunno. I am wondering if I'm spoiled. Its its probably under 40 miles between here and there.. however, I also feel taht by staying home.. I'm severly limiting what I can do because it creates the havoc of not really being in one particular location. I am really neither here nor there... Plus I have to try to make enough money for gas.. which I can do.. but, thats all the money I'll be making with the limited hours i'll be able to get..

Brah, take the best route you possibly can. If this were me, I'd do the mooching off mom and dad. Why? It's not because I want to become a slacker it's just that how well you do during this time will directly, not indirectly, but directly influence how well you do after this period. If you have an opportunity to do the best you can do without having to worry about performance at work, and you can focus 100% on school then man you should take advantage of that. I worked a full time job during my first semester and I regret it. Not because of the pay - it was decent for my circumstance - but because now I'm a full semester behind, and having to double up the next couple of semesters and take summer courses (when everyone else is working and getting money). If I would've given more to school without regards to working as much, I'd be THAT much closer to my degree. Now I'm playing catch-up. You're not necessarily spoiled. Lots of people are students full time in dorms with no job. That's sort of what college is about. Experiences before you have to settle down for the long haul to retirement.

I'm with you Helms. I realize that things are really different than when I went to school. Technology has progressed with leaps and bounds since 1984. but I was there to earn my degrees and graduate. I worked my way thru school becasue I only had a partial scholarship. It was hard but I made it. I rarely dated and usually slept when I had down time. I had friends but we were all in the same kind of zone. I really didn't go to school to make friends and and be popular or see how much I could drink without puking or passing out. Most of those kids didn't make the grade. Most were either dropped out themselves or were dropped because of bad grades.

Ironic my dad just walked in and talked about how 18 cred hours is too much and most people have 15. He said to drop a class and I got the OK to quit my job.
I can't say I want to quit my job.. however, they are at least making it my choice.
At least now I can check out the debate team and have time to enjoy college.
Edit* I should probably also point out I have no intention of partying. I am not really concerned with popularity. I just want to have a few hours every now and then me and my friends can just totally act retarded without worrying about the next test talk about world war 2, religion, video games or whatever we feel like.
If it came down to having to work and school then I'd do what I have to.
To the user whom's name I can't remember. My chemistry teacher pointed out something pretty valuable. If your going to party.. don't do it your first year. Freshman (and sophmore)year is perhaps the most important year because, it can give you something to fall back on.
I may have sucked in chemistry however, I do tend to catch some good points.
So I'll be able to stick around on campus some days when I want to hang out.. works for me. Now I just have to do well xD

I think there are several options for how to "do" college. And I don't at all think any of the options you or others listed means you're a spoiled kid at all. If you have parents who are willing to provide for you while you're in college, that's great. It's a gift. If you live at home or if they pay your room and board...they're your parents. But there's a couple of different ways you could respond to it.
First of all, you could make the most of your college education - academic and otherwise. Be responsible and be a good steward of the gift they've given you. Don't waste their money. Get decent grades. Take care of your dorm room/apartment. Study when you need to, but develop friends and interests. And above all, make sure they know how grateful you are for them. That's what a responsible kid would do.
Or...you could completely crap all over your parents and their provision. Be irresponsible and blow their money. Don't take care of your dorm room/apartment cause you ain't paying for it any way. Don't worry about grades or classes. You really don't have any investment in them anyway. And, by all means, keep asking your folks for more. That's what a spoiled kid would do.
I've got a feeling I know which road you would take.
