I don't know about you folks, but I find it offensive when people say, "That's so gay!" when they mean stupid/unfair/crazy/etc. I'm not gay, but I still find it hurtful. When I hear someone saying that, I turn it around so it goes like this:PERSON: Oh, our school's so gay!ME: Our school is homosexual? I don't think the building has a sexual orientation. How do you feel about this?

That's So "Homosexual?!"
-
It's become such a common word these days. It's kind of like other words like "shit" which some people use in every other sentence.Things like "I can't go to the movie tonight" "That's gay" are pretty common. It's just a misuse of the word, basically.
-
Afraid to say, I'm an avid user of that phrase.
-
It's so common that it doesn't mean much. Like saying fuck... So no it doesn't bother me.
-
It's quite common among the teen generation. If I remember correctly, it might have been used when I was a teen over 30 years ago.
-
I think its just people being stupid. They dont understand something, or they do, but theyve heard it so often that it becomes part of their everyday speech. And if you think about if, Gay mean happy, ive never found any justifiable link between homsexual and gay, linguistically speaking.
-
It's said just like a normal word.It replaces words like "sucks" ... instead of "that sucks" you'd say "that's gay" and it means the exact same thing. Same tone and all.Another example is "You're stupid", or "You're gay". As the TC said, "School's gay" or "School sux/is dumb"You get the idea.
-
I think is really derogatory, and plain old inconsiderate. I used to say it a lot, until I realized that it's actually really rude, and i've stopped saying it like that now.
It's like saying that being gay is an adjective that means bad, which it's not. Gay poeple don't run around saying, 'that's so straight' so we should treat them with the same curtesy.
-
Heh, you sound like one of my best friends! For example, if she were to hear someone say 'That book is so gay' she would turn around and say 'I don't know about you, but last time I checked, inanimate objects didn't have a sexual preference. I've never seen any of the books in the library screw one another.'
-
I think that's a bit of an overreaction...in my opinion. The word gay had meaning centuries before it had anything to do with homosexuality. Like the rainbow, it doesn't "belong" to the gay community. As for the folks you hear using it that way, it can mean a lot of things to them, but I'm quite sure it has nothing to do with homosexuality. Do you have problems with someone using the word "fat" as a good thing? That's a fat rhyme? If someone called your friend a prick, would you really think they meant your friend was a penis?
-
I use that phrase alot!:S I even tend to say "stop being gay" or "omg you're soo gay"But i don't mean it as you're so homosexual
-

He's talking about the Moderator who... changed her name to LoveBritish.
-
......Sorry for trying to help.
-
If I were to say "Uniforms are go gay", would you be offended or agree with me? Plus, there's weirder slang out there. The one I never understood is "What's up, dawg?" or "What's up, fool?". I'm not offended by it, it's just odd.
-
It's cool, I'm just the new guy after all, so it's fine.
-
As a gay man I'm not usually offended by the phrase, though I think it's pretty ignorant. I have two younger brother who used to use the phrase a lot but I knocked it out of them pretty early on.I do counter the phrase though, when I hear someone say "That's Gay" I'll counter back "I don't know, seems pretty straight to me!". I usually get an odd face, than they get the hint and shut up.Edit:Forgot to add I do think it does nothing to help the homosexual community that people use a slang that's a negative reaction to something they don't like. Does nothing but re-enforce peoples agenda that "Homosexuals are bad!"

It has to do with imparting a negative connotation on a given subject or action. In it's use as is being discussed here saying something "is gay" is saying something is not right, it's abnormal, it's outside the bounds of everyday reason. To put it bluntly saying something is "gay" is saying it's wrong just as someone who is gay is wrong. Now that may not be what everyone means when they say it but that's what "it's gay" means. Saying it has nothing to do with homosexuality I find a bit disingenuous. No one, within it's popular modern use, started saying "that's gay" with the intent of any connection to being exuberantly positive.

That's how I feel about the words 'retard/retarded'.
-
Exactly! That's a great example it's the exact same thing.
