I seriously doubt it is or has anything to do with a school. A couple of the girls had tiaras on their head. I would venture to say that it was some birthday party or some other type of kids celebration. The morality of the scene is atrocious in my opinion. What was the influence? I don't know. Was it media? Perhaps... but you really love to drive things to the extreme thor.

School dances sure have changed.

If you took this little snippet back just 50 years (a relatively short time-period in the grand scheme of things), I think any adults present would have been thrown in jail. Would you consider that extreme also? Again, it depends on your point of reference. And if that reference point is removed or nullified somehow...One more extreme point. Consider what was going on with the culture at any point in history where this snippet would not have seemed extreme (if you can find any)...then watch what happens to that society shortly thereafter.BTW, at that age, do you really think boys and girls would be found together? Boys were icky and girls had cooties at that age...remember? And I saw only one adult briefly present...though there may have been a second one running the camera (assuming it was not on a stand). This looks like a school of some kind to me. Does that look like some kind of person's home to you? I'll have another look later.

actually, it didn't look too different from the back yards I've seen in the Caribbean. Quite reminiscent of a place we stopped for a beer in St Lucia... a buddy of the buss driver was having a party.
That's why I was hoping someone might be able to pick up on some of the dialogue in the video. Nothing makes it excusable but I'm still curious as to the back story. -
Again, when I say extreme.. I mean you tend take things too far as in your posts.. Case in point... You are questioning me as to whether this behavior is acceptable and are presenting various scenarios.. Dude.. settle down.. Of course it's not acceptable.. now or ever. And again.. I really do think this is some birthday party at someones home.. See the streamers hanging from the ceiling in the beginning??.. Why would a girl be wearing a tiara and carry a wand in school?

Why would a girl be wearing a tiara and carry a wand in school? You might be right...I'll have to take another look. At that age, I'm sure it could just as easily be a birthday celebration (if that's what it is) at a school or maybe a daycare of some kind. However, it was you who first seemed to suggest it was at a school (re: the thread title). Quote:Of course it's not acceptable.. now or ever.I sometimes think that, in this overly permissive society that has been allowed to develop, a light needs to be shined, blaringly, on those things that go way too far. If you choose to call that extreme, than so be it. Things like this video are an indication of the direction our society is going, and a harbinger of what is to come.

Becasue that is the title of the video... I still doubt it has anything to do with a school.. The person who posted the video was probably just joking with the title.

:wink:Possibly...the video title would seem to suggest otherwise. We're not sure yet, and neither are you.

No, it's a bunch of ho's perping on little kids.
I can imagine, based on what I saw, any "context" that would change my mind about that. -
We really know next to nothing about the video. It does look set up to me - the children have obviously been taught the moves.Since we don't know that this is from the US and it seems likely it isn't, there is little point analysing it from the standpoint of American culture. The tensions in American culture between puritan roots and a philosophy of pursuit of happiness, between opposing ethoi of moral rigour and libertarianism, and their effects on attitudes to childhood, is an interesting discussion but probably has little relevance to the video.

I'm older than you thor, so defer - or expose your hypocrisy.Perhaps when you reach my age you will realise what a fool you have been (but I doubt it).

From the way they all dance erotically from the beginning, I deduced they have been coached. If you asked a group of young children simply to dance, I think you would expect a variation of styles, at least at first, and (at that age) some reluctance to pair up. Of course it is possible that before the start of the video they had already been through that stage, and had got to the stage of unanimity, but it does seem too uniform.
-
IDK.. It seems like it might be the thing "to do" in whatever part of the world they are and thus know how to do it.

I definately heard "aye corumba" more than once. As for being US or not, I see nothing that would indicate one way or another. But I do note at least one person had a cell phone, and we must acknowledge that somebody there had a video camera. Those things, especially the camera, would make me lean a little more towards it being inside the US. But, as I said before, really inconclusive. Still not sure it wasn't some kind of school. Too many kids of varying ages laying around...and there was definitely some teaching going on there, official gov't or not.

It looks like you are right, sdp. Googling the video brings up lots of discussions from people who, like us, really know little about it; but at http://eqoa.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=4&mid=126678035777589391&num=14&page=1 there is a poster who does know something. She(?) says:This is called "perreo" and it's the standard humplike dance for reggeaton. I'm guessing this video is from a house birthday party in the D.R., from the accent. On the one hand, I remember dancing salsa and merengue with my cousins and it being no big deal (adults would laugh at us acting all grown and point out how we were doing), so I tend to think that they taped it as a joke. At one point the woman getting the kids to dance yells "Get the cops, get the firefighters".On the other hand, I remember dance contests being a big thing, entertainment-wise at parties and you would just do the latest dance. I've seen kids dance a convincing tango that made me feel icky, so I think it's a definite possibility these kids just know that this is how you dance to that kind of music and catch on pretty quickly to what that means. That one older couple in the back of the room kissed at one point, I'm pretty sure. When the camera pans back on them, the girl is helping the guy wipe his lips.I'm not a sociologist, but I'd tend to think the more humble the community, the earlier they'll be knocking boots. I once met a guy from Ghana who told me he got some at 5, and I know a guy from Mexico that lost it at 9.There's a useful Wikipedia article on perreo. Significant to our discussion is that this is the standard dance associated with that type of music. Hence the uniformity I was concerned about, which shows that I was looking at the situation from a too Western point of view.

Some things are just plain wrong...regardless of how "enlightened" one believes their point of view to be.It appears the most likely place this video came from is Puerto Rico...an American territory, if I'm not mistaken. Now it's on the internet.

don't know what it has to do with enlightenment. Some things are fine for grownups but not for kids.Old punk that I am, I would suggest that slam dancing is not for kids either as they don't know the methods of avoiding injury nor the unspoken honor system involved.
