Depression sucks

I think it depends on how severe the depression is, and how long you have been depressed. Where is Damiens great post about what to do and not do? Can I assist you in getting over this depression? grin

THINGS TO DO WHEN YOU'RE DEPRESSED:- Get a thorough physical exam - and level with your doctor!- Avoid alcohol. Completely.- Strive to learn about your vulnerabilites and develop ways to manage them.- Learn to distinguish between facts, beliefs, and feelings.- Challenge yourself by asking "How do I know?"- Try to exercise regularly. (Studies show that the benifit of exercising equals the benifit of medications.)- Do fun things and do them often.- Get and stay connected to others. (This might seem difficult in a new place, but even small connections can make a huge difference.)- Learn to relax.- Be goal-oriented in important areas.- Prioritize and problem solve.- Get support. Get help. Don't wait!THINGS NOT TO DO WHEN YOU'RE DEPRESSED:- Don't dwell on the past. Tomorrow hasn't happened yet.- Don't compare yourself to others. (Abraham Lincoln said "You have to do your own growing no matter how tall your daddy was.")- Don't catastrophize - understand probabillity.- Don't leave things unsaid or unresolved.- Don't analyze too deeply. Move on.- Don't reject yourself; define your assets- Don't ignore reality. Get the facts!- Don't ignore your own needs. Self-care is not the same as selfish.- Don't give up or be passive. Try again. BUT DO SOMETHING DIFFERENT!- Don't isolate. Find good people to be with.- Don't leave time unstructured.here it is.not sure if its the 1 u ment tho.

Roc, from what I've seen, most depression is caused by things other than neurological stuff. So I would have to say yeah, you can get over it without meds.Dr. David Burns, who wrote Feeling Good and is one of the grand poopahs of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, showed that something like 75% of all clients with depression got over it with CBT alone. Other therapists show similar results with different models of therapy.I'm a big proponent of taking meds when they're prescribed, but I still contend that most depression is situational or comes from distorted thinking and stuff like that. The problem is, when most people get depressed they go to a psychiatrist or psychologist who operate on the medical model, where everything is pathological and the person is their sickness. If you go, however, to a therapist or a counselor (particularly family therapists) who don't operate by the medical model, they operate from the assumption that it is not pathological and can be treated with therapy. One of the coolest things I've learned over the past month is that regular exercise has the same therapeutic effect on people with depression as medicine does. And yeah...I hate depression too.

Y'know, some people actually come here looking for help.Let them have it.

In reply to: One of the coolest things I've learned over the past month is that regular exercise has the same therapeutic effect on people with depression as medicine does. I very much agree. Whenever I'm feeling down/angry/depressed I go for a run and really push myself. Once I've finished I feel soooo much better.

Baby, I told you a few things to start with, and im glad the morning walk idea is working, as Damien said exercise helps a lot t make you feel better..........doing one postive/constructive thing everyday, no matter how big or small, is a good idea too..........You know where i am darlin if you need me cuddles

Thanks for all of the advice.... It means a lot to me...

i hate it too i from what many people have told me i dont have the emblance it is possible that i have just a low level of Seriton that makes me just naturally depressed low mood but then i dont know im not a doctor if there is a doctor in the house can this be true.
-
Damien is so on the money! A good workout releases natural endorphines in the brain which makes your juices in your brain work better like what the meds would help do. Not to mention a good diet helps out a bunch too!!! When I eat crappy food such as fast food, I tend to get very depressed.
-
sniff sniff I MISS DAMIEN!!!

In reply to:from what many people have told me i dont have the emblance it is possible that i have just a low level of Seriton that makes me just naturally depressedBy "emblance" do you mean "imbalance", MysteryManAlpha? If so, having a low level of serotonin would be an imbalance and yes, it's possible. Some people do have a strong tendency to depression.
-
yes
-
yeah. i think it really depends on the person and what their situation is.
-
Well,
I believe that regardless of their situation, depression is depression. There are different levels of depression but in most cases, their situation is more than likely the cause of their depression.
