In reply to: ah the age old question. Does one have to be able to compose or read music or play an instrument to be a critic. The answer is no. Oscar Wilde wrote two interesting treatise on how being a critic was itself an art form all of itself, entirely detatched from the art that the critic is criticising. I highly reccamend them, The Critic as an Artist I, and The Critic as an Artist II.

Any metal lovers out there?
-
I remembered something about that.
-
You coould probably find them on the internet if your interested. There written in the form of dialogue between two intellectuals which makes them easy to read for those who are scared of the thought of reading philosophical essays.
-
Well if I read it lol...I am lazy

There way to many genres to actually listen theres so much Metal type of genere but yea its still metal because it was built of it, ex Red Hot Chili Peppers they are "Funk Rock" a combination of Classic Rock and i forgot the other thing but yea. As you said SYL you dont have to be a critic to critizie is it, but to understand it...you have to.For Metalica the guys voice does fit the band cause of the low notes he can do nicely but doesnt sing things musically he is though talented! I love solos the most and Kirk's are not of the best solos around, It sounds to me he isnt trying to do his hardest, his early work was kick ass but now i think metalica sold out, big time!

In reply to: Kirk's are not of the best solos around, It sounds to me he isnt trying to do his hardest, his early work was kick ass but now i think metalica sold out, big time! Okay please tell me how you are judging a players effort. DO you know how hard he is trying? Is it not his style and that is how he does it? And selling out, what did they do? Make music videos, sell lots of records because they made popular and good music. Napster? All that did was spur a much larger amount of websites to get music from. But please when you make accusations can you learn to supply something called proof, to support your statement.

K, compare him to Steve Vai or Van Halen, even Page or Young or B.B King!! maybe even Satriany...def him! Kirk would not top the list, he could not be close to these talented people!! Each Guitarist have their own style to play and they enforce them selves to play like that then you hear Kirk sounds like a fuck 3 piece chord solo!!! what is the that 50's!!
-
no no no, you said he is not trying. That may be the peak of his ability or maybe that is not his focus to do what Steve Vai or SRV or Halen has done. You cannot say that b/c he may have a different goal. Trust me he does, you really should read up on him before you judge his ability.
-
I dont judge music by how many chords a guitarist plays. i judge it by a very simple method. By how much I find the sound enjoyable in some way. Nothing else has any value.
-
Lol SYL it does matter what chords or how you put together to make the solo! Solos have to have a feeling yet sadly i dont know why people cannot heard the messages behind a guitarist solo. Its not subliminal messaging, You should try to do some ear training exercise, i do it 1 hour each day then practice for 3 hours every day!
-
Not all solos are going to sound good, more guitarist like Satriani dont go for the sounds but to the rhythm of the song. Listen to some solos after a while you can start hearing the things.
-
Exactly Radakl. The ONLY thing that matters is pleasure and enjoyment. The stuff serves no other purpose to me. That doesnt mean I dont understand the music.
-
for someone who listens and plays so much music you seem to be missing a big part. A solo does have a message but it is also meant to show the departure from the constant message of the rest of the song. And In reply to: it does matter what chords or how you put together to make the solo! Solos have to have a feeling no it does not. Have you heard of minimalism, serialism? There is no specific form for music to have meaning. You seem to be going against how music has progressed. You are a preservationalist, seeming to feel that it must be a specific way for it to have meaning. Here is something, you have a valid oppinion, and we all do because music is subjective. You need to grasp that your oppinion on this is not overruling, and that when you attack musical form. Please purplestain understand the words you speak are not explaining music. These solos you speak of come from a much bigger background.
-
The solo is what keeps the songs going. Exept for Vai all his songs are just guitaring, he is not in a band or such but yet he plays awsomely! Listen to "for the love of god" by him and tell me what its saying.
-
Why do you presume your interpretation is correct? All art is subjective. Oscar Wilde touches on this in the aforementioned The Critic as an Artist. The reason the critic is an artist is because he creates beuaty out of the art he views which he then projects to other people (thus creating a work of art). He has created a work of beauty from someone else work of art, a new creation of beauty from his own speculation on a work of art. A different critic could create another beauty from the same work of art.
-
you seem to not understand. It is going to be subjective. And a solo is not what keeps a song going. AABA...that is a typical form of rockor you can haveAAAA or ACDEFGHIJK....A solo by definition is a departure from the main rythym and melody. Just because it is a guitarist going alone does not mean when a band plays a different riff, without a guitar going it alone, still means it is a solo because it is departing the original thought or meaning and is going onto something different.
-
I am not, try listening to songs and then try tabbing them thats where you can get good experience for songs. I did some tabbing my self then i played it sounded right but when i hear the songs then i have to re-tune the guitar lets say to Drop-D which most rockers use, and to put up in standard it takes a while. Tuning a guitar by ear without a piano takes forever!!!

hahaha I have only played for 1.5 years, and I do it just fine. And I will even test to see. It is not hard if you care to listen. Something you should try. -
None of that makes your interpretations of other peoples music any more revelant than anyone elses.

Go back to Jeeps! The solo is what gives the "flavour" to the song quoeted by the guitarist from Scorpions AABA is not for rock that is for classical and there is no such thing as ABCDEFGHIJK it only goes to A-D or A-B B is for Bridge and sometimes V is for VerseTypical song right here. This was my guitar project on Belam in Belgium by AC/DC. The song goes V V V C V V B V CThat is how AC/DC did that song there is so many combinations its not funny! guitar is not for the weak minded. We have Drama or Dance for those
