I don't think it is at all good to throw a child's toys away without permission. These are the equivalent of an adult's photo album, reminders of the past. I think to throw a child's property out is to teach the child that nothing matters because what you have will be taken away; and in particular that property rights don't matter.

That spring cleaning thing

That is the thing though, it is their job to do the things to keep their belongings. Clean their room, and such. If they choose not to do it, then they choose to have it tossed or given away.If my neighbors were to call the county and say my place was a disaster, I would get an inspection from the county, if it was deemed too messy, I'd be given 30 days to clean up my mess, and then they would come in and clean it up for me, and send the bill to me for the disposal...They might be a bit young, but it IS reality. They get the chances to make good choices....

actually im going to agree with ineligible, i mean its one thing to take them away for awhile but to just throw them away seems wrong, let alone wasteful. i mean the only thing i have from my childhood is a pencil box i bought with some points from a reading program in 2nd or 3rd grade that i wrote "Dan & Marie Forever" on (my first love lol) but other then that i dont have any toys or blankets or anything and i can barely remember my childhood, save for some moments, a few of them including some part of me bleeding.when i have kids if one or more of them are really horrid i might act like im throwing it away but just store it somewhere safe and out of the house until theyve actually changed but i wouldnt just throw or give it away

I'm with you on that. If the toy is laying in my hallway for a couple days, it obviously doesn't mean that much to my kids. Otherwise, they would be playing with it or it would be put away. Which is exactly what I tell them and 9 times out of 10 it won't be laying in my hallway on my next trip through. They know I will put it in a box for some other kids that would like and appreciate it.

So that's why mom gave away all my Star Wars shit that's now worth a fortune.

just to take it and toss it is wrong, but if its been in storage for months on end and they cant do what they are told to do to earn them back, maybe the threat of losing it forever would be enough to get their attention. I do not believe in empty threats, if I say it, its as good as done.

I don't know, I had a bunch of little cars, like Corgi cars, that sat in my closet from the time I was about 11 and mom got rid of after I went to college. It still pisses me off. Yeah, I didn't do anything with 'em anymore but damn it, they were mine. I kept 'em all in a box in my closet for a reason.Well at least she kept the really good ones...

I would not be in this discussion if my kids had their stuff put up, in a box.I'd be ticked if I were you too Scotty, you were doing the right thing and still got burned...
-
I don't know about doing the right thing. She had told me to get whatever I wanted out of my closet. I got some of my clothes. I just thought she had enough good sense to not throw away the important crap I wanted to keep.
-
that wasnt a punishment though, Id be pissed too, besides whats the collectors value of them now? Know how many kids would be millionaires if parents had not thrown out the baseball cards they collected in the 50s when they hit college?

My parents went through my bookshelves and cupboards and threw out anything they thought was now too young for me, while I was living at home. It still rankles. But there are worse - I know of one father who destroyed his son's prized bike with a sledgehammer for some rule infraction.
-
I was at a friends house, whose child was throwing a temper tantrum, and ran into his room and began destroying all the things he owned, All i was thinking was "Wow, he does his parents work for him" I can never understand a kid that destroys his own stuff. Although, when I was little, and something made my dad mad, he would throw stuff and break stuff, Ill bet he wrecked his own stuff when he was little :P
