Only in Texas... and Oklahoma soon

To be honest, I'd actually prefer armed guards in school (in pairs). With M-16s. That would end the trouble overnight and make it pretty difficult for kids to walk off with a weapon. It would be an ititial shock, but once kids got used the them the only different would be a near lack of violence at school. Most kids would welcome it.

How many teachers do you think would be capable of picking up a gun to kill another human (student) who's gone on a rampage?

"Every teacher" is an ideal...a "pipe-dream". We'd have to settle for a "volunteer-only" situation. Hence my "better idea" of armed guards.

The scariest part is Steph, it may not even be a fucked up kid. It could be some kid that knows where coach keeps the gun or how to get to it and just wants to scare little Johnny, or show how cool they are. The scariest part is the simple fist fight now has the potential to go postal.I can see a situation where coach comes out to break up a fight and while he's pulling Billy off Johnny, Billy sees the gun in coach's shoulder holster and in a temporary fit of rage gets the gun from coach and blows Johnny's head off and probably coach's as well.As a gun owner and gun rights kinda guy, in general, I see this as going way over the line. There is simply no need to have teachers carrying guns in school.

Wow just thinking about it gives me the willies. I would not feel safe having my kids attend school knowing the teachers were carrying guns.

Quote:I disagree. The only children who would feel threatened are the ones with an intent to cause violence.Personally, I would feel slightly scared in knowing that a teacher stood before me with a loaded gun in his pocket. Oh and believe me, I have no intent at all to cause violence. What is a good solution? To be honest, I have no great idea! Maybe more guidance available to kids or maybe even use of metal detectors. But guns for teachers? That's a tragedy waiting to happen and something I would never consider as an option.

I truly think we need better security in schools, metal detectors, etc. I remember when I was in school, right after the columbine shooting; they restricted all backpacks, purses etc. Granted that didn’t last more than a few months, and I remember it being a pain in the ass having to carry my books everywhere instead of using my backpack… but looking back now I can see how that was necessary.

I'm ambivalent on this. Though this is really anecdotal, I know a lot of teachers that I would trust with a gun (one being a man who served in the Army in Germany as a sort of police officer). However, as I said, I go to a really good public school, so I don't know what it would be like in other schools. One problem I could think of is the possibility of a student getting his hands on a teacher's gun.
