Howdy Possum! When it comes to global warming I think it's a combination of natural happening and man caused. As people said our planet has always gone through warm and cold stages, it's a natural occurance. But at the same time this "heat wave" has been coming faster than natural. With all the deforesting, pollution etc I am sure is causing global warming to progress faster.A good example others have already said are the polar ice caps. They are melting extremely fast.

Global Warming

I have read further into it and I agree that all it says is "This is a myth and this is fact." But thats exactly what its meant to say, its a simple True/False paper to answer questions quickly. If you want the full reports with references just check out the rest of their site.

_Oh and about the polar ice caps melting. They're not really melting as the news media wants us to think. When the some parts of glaciers are falling into the ocean, that's because the glaciers are actually growing. Yes it's true! If they were melting you would see them turn into thin ice then water.

You don't know what you're talking about.
Do you need pictures? OK Here.. Nevermind the text..http://www.nrdc.org/globalwarming/images/fcons5.jpg

I am sort of on the fence with this one. There are natural changes that have occurred, but people aren't helping the situation much.
I drove up to Klamath Falls, OR yesterday. From here I see one side of Mt. Shasta, from KFalls, I see the other side. There is so little snow on the mountain that I was appalled. I have been here 16yrs, and have NEVER seen so little snow.
The other first, a fire at the tundra line. Usually the mountain maintains a bit of its own weather, and the tree line doesn't burn. Yet, there it was, growing like crazy, in terrain that is nearly impossible to negotiate.
I don't know what it is for sure, but something is up.

Hmm had a read few a few more articles on the page. But I really dont know what to belive after reading some other stuff and the video where others claim scientists and companys are lying about global warming because their jobs depend on it and also scientists get allot of funding from it. Seems people have allot to loose if global warming is a hoax which leaves my very skeptical about what studdies are even correct, sometimes I wish I had the knowlage and eqiptment to find these things out myself but unfortunatly I have to rely on others :(. Its definatly true that the world is warmer but what is causing it is very debatable. Its very tough to tell whos lying or twisting the truth. But I feel the scientists saying global warming is a sham have allot to loose which leaves me wondering why they would say its a hoax it if were lying.

Yes, but a lot of them could have jobs that depend on humanity's involvement in Global Warming being a hoax, so they may have a lot to lose if they don't speak up.

I hate these discussion...and yet here I am.I'm not buying the global warming hype at all. If you look through history (and I'm talking a thousand years, not a hundred) it's very cyclical. I don't believe the reports about the ice caps are true. And I don't think a video of an iceberg collapsing proves anything about overall, worldwide temperature trends. It was the same hype back in the 70's. Cept then all the same-or-same-types of people were yelping about the coming ice age.On any given day, at any point in history, a new high and low temperature record will be set somewhere on the globe.Even if there were this thing called global warming, there is no conclusive evidence that it is caused by humans. That being said, we in the industrialized nations have been doing a piss poor job of taking care of our environment, and our selfishness and lack of concern for our world has ongoing negative consequences.

I don't believe the reports about the ice caps are true. So the pictures are BS? So the disappearing glaciers are BS?

This is not the only place I've noticed this but I have noticed a corolation between relgious views and views on climate change. It seems the stronger the religious beliefs the less likely the person is to acsept global warming evidence and the converse also seems to be true as well. Just an observation.
For my part the winter mean temp. is rising hear. There are very few prolonged cold spells here anymore.
-
I had noticed that too but I didn't want to mention it, oddly enough I'd actually like this thread to stay on topic and not become another religious debate (they're too easy).

You sir. have spoken my emotions and thoughts on this subject excately as I hoped to type them.
I would however, like to add. Looking at it from a secular point of view the earth has been around for millions of years. What evidence do we have that human exsistence is only possible because we are in an ice age =/.
We may just becomeing out of an ice age >.<
You already brought up another point that I was going to make about global freezing so good job >.>

Global freezing???

Although there is little doubt about it, nobody really knows, humans in our current form have never existed outside of an ice age. We've only been around for about 200,000 years. But obviously our ancestors could survive it. If we're coming out of the ice age then the human population will plummet. Our species can survive, we've evolved and advanced enough to protect ourselves, but I doubt that we'll be able to keep our population as high as it is, it's unnaturally high anyway.
And can you all please stop repeating how we're coming into a heating period and that our climate is cyclical. Nobody denies that. The global warming concern is that our climate is getting warmer and more unstable than before, and in the last century it has happened faster than before. CO2 levels in our atmosphere are over 380ppm which is about 30% higher than at any other point in the past 650,000 years. In 1832 it was 284ppm and in 1960 it was 316ppm. That's a 32ppm increase over a period of 128 years. Yet in the past 47 years, it's gone up by about 65ppm.
The Global Warming dispute is not over whether its actually happening, its over whether this dramatic increase in Green House Gasses, the rapid temperature increase and shifting climate is because of human activity or not.

Of course it goes through cycles. Who said it doesn't? You were saying that we're not going into a warming cycle and the receding glaciers and ice shelfs are BS. What are you talking about?

Not long ago scientist thought the world was getting colder =/

See, now I can't stop thinking about this!! Why is that this discussion has split into two teams - those who believe in God and those who don't?Damien, JapanFan, AW, Nny - Lovely Christian folk, refuse to believe that there is a problem. Myself, sdp, OldFolks, CBW - Pretty much an Agnostic group, strong supporters of science at least, all see the evidence pointing towards a problem and wonder if its our own doing.NtroducingMyself is a lone ranger, a Christian who notices a problem. But sure he's also a gay Christian so he obviously doesn't like to follow the norm! Why is it that the people who are against the idea of Global Warming all just happen to be Christian? Is it based on the belief that you just don't think God would do this to us? I'm really not trying to bring this thread off topic, I'm just seeing if there is an actual relationship between the two beliefs. And an interesting question:If Thor joined this discussion, which side do you think he'd pick?
-
I believe there is a problem, and I'm also a Christian. I just happen to believe that science can be used to reinforce certain teachings in the bible, and that science can not explain all things that happen. Global warming, gravity, the sun residing as the center of our solar system, all things in a long list of things that are undeniable. Spiritual encounters, answer prayers, moral teachings, all things that I have faith in. I'm not blind to science (want to be an engineer when I grow up hehe, part of the scientific community) nor do I live by faith alone. There needs to be some sort of toulmanic or rogerian compromise. You can't refute gravity (or lack thereof under certain conditions) , nor can one prove or DISPROVE God exists. No amount of theorems, or quantum mechanics can do either.

I dont really get how it has anything to do with religion :S I dont accept it because of the science reports I have read. Are religious people not allowed to belive global warming?

How can science be used to reinforce the teachings in the Bible? It seems to me that the Bible often enjoyed going against the laws of physics.
