I quote from Chapter 20, verses 1 to 17:
13. Thou shalt not kill.
What does this personally men to you?
How do you reconcile this regarding war and capital punishment?
The Ten Commandments as in the Book of Exodus

As I understand it, the more modern translation "you shall do no murder" renders the Hebrew more accurately.
Actually we had a really long discussion on this in my ethics class.
I would say that it means that though shall not murder. Would you protect yourself and your family if someone was intentionally putting them in danger??
If someone broke into your house.. and you told your wife to hide in the closet.. and the man said "is your wife in the closet?" Would you tell him the truth and break one of the commandments??
Quote:If someone broke into your house.. and you told your wife to hide in the closet.. and the man said "is your wife in the closet?" Would you tell him the truth and break one of the commandments??What? Telling someone that your wife is in the closet breaks a commandment?
So if your wife comes out of the closet, is the death penalty OK?
What I wanna know is if the wife comes out of the closet, does that mean my marriage is just a sham and now is over so she can run off with her secret sexy woman lover?
Its not ethical to kill.. its not ethical to lie.But if you had to do it to save a life would you?
Chance.. if someone broke into your house.. intending to rape and murder your wife.. attack your children. What would you do?
First off you have to remember that I dont worry about god, I fall on the other side of the line. Second, Id kill them.I have a rather nice compound in my room, a gun safe and several guns, I have been in alot of shit in my life, especially my younger dumber days, Iv been shot at and shot once, several knife fights and stabbed 2 times, I dont wrestle with moral questions, my theories on this issue state: 2 in the chest and 1 in the head, dead men dont sue.I dont really care what the intent was, someone breaking into my house means that they wont be leaving alive, or that Ill be leaving on a stretcher in the back of a hearst. It would be a real bastard to get the safe out of the house should someone break in when Im nto home, its bolted to the floor and wall with 1" bolts from the inside. Its always locked, and at night I have a .357 under my pillow, fully loaded with some very special bullets I made myself. I prefer revolvers, its damned near impossible to set on off accidently. Anyone who fucks with me or mine is in a world of shit. I always have a gun onme, and atleast 2 knives, a nice little dual edged boot knife on my right ankle, and a sweet little balanced throwing knife across my back.I also have a concealed carry permit. and when its possible to do so, like now in winter I keep a gun on my person when I go out.make no mistake, I have no issues about killing people, fuck em.Stay out of my house, Ill keep my lead and mercury out of you.
I think there is a bit of a difference between the moral standing of lying and of killing. And there is almost always an alternative to killing. But when people are angry or scared, they don't think. They conclude that they have only one option.
I dont know about that bobbo. If some asshole breaks into my house I COULD wound them and stop whats going on, but if I kill his ass, he wont be sueing me, and he wont be coming back for revenge, he wont be doing the same shit to someone else down the road either.I dont pretend to be the mighty protector understand, I jsut say fuck em, inmy house, out on a gourney.the added addition that they wont be doing it to someone else is a bonus, not a goal.
They could sue you for injuring them after they break into your house? Strange, I always thought that when someone breaks into your home, you can legally do whatever is neccessary to protect yourself and your family.Thats pretty much how it works here, altho there was an odd case in the past year. A farmer killed a guy after he had broken into his home. The only problem was that the guy was running away from the house and was shot twice in the back with a shotgun. But its ok, he got away with it.
i thought i heard about one situation where some guy broke into a womans house through a sunlight or something, fell and cut himself on a knife and sued her, i know i heard that in Liar Liar but i think it actually happened im sure someone will correct me
I don't know if that actually happened, but something similar probably inspired the joke.
Quote:They could sue you for injuring them after they break into your house? Strange, I always thought that when someone breaks into your home, you can legally do whatever is neccessary to protect yourself and your family. It's more complicated than that in the U.S., but Florida instated a law, the "Hold Your Ground" law, that made it totally OK to shoot someone who comes onto your property. I suppose you could invite someone you don't like to your house and shoot them when they step inside. As long as your aim is good, no one will complain. Also, the death penalty is legal and used in Florida. Therefore, the commandment involving killing doesn't apply here. But we're still not allowed to make any graven images.
Quote:13. Thou shalt not kill. What does this personally men to you?The problem I have with the ten commandments is it's too black and white. Do this. Don't do that. Life is not black and white. With that being said... I believe "Thou shalt not kill" is too short to explain anything. It would be better off, "You should n ot kill", but then again that's also too short.I honestly don't think man could trully write down the things he or she can and can't do...
Quote:I suppose you could invite someone you don't like to your house and shoot them when they step inside.Nope, ya can't. Homer Simpson tried to do that with Ned Flanders but Marge said it doesn't count if you invite him.
well then you just have to make sure nobody knows you invited them
