Stabbing and Beheading on Greyhound

Death is not equal. Sure, the end product is the same, a dead person. But not every death has the same effect on me. And no one on this board or anywhere else gets to lay out criteria for which deaths should bother me the most, or take me to task because one death bothers me more than another.Josh drowned in Green River Lake on Monday of this week. They finally recovered his body yesterday. He was 23 and the oldest of 12 children. A beautiful, wonderful, amazing family who owns the coffee shop/cafe on the square. Josh was outgoing, respectful in ways too many 23 year olds aren't, a hard worker, and a joy to be around. And know what? Of all the innocent children who have lost their lives in this war and in terrorist attacks, none of their deaths have bothered me as much as Josh's. Does that make me horrible. Hardly. Does that mean I believe Josh's life had more value than those children? Absolutely not. What I'm saying is that the impact of a death on a person is usually based on very subjective criteria...probably too subjective to use the word criteria. So all of this talk about why people are bothered by this murder and why it gets more attention than children dying in Iraq (which I don't believe it does)...well, it's chasing the wind, my friends.

replying to you again steph, cuz your the o.p. Okay everyone, seriously now, what sounds more horrific :a) A person passing away from old age? b) A 22 year old who was beheaded and eaten?i dont have a lot of point in posting this. BUT either way, regardless if the older person passed away peacful, or the young man was murdered. ITS STILL DEATH. People will be affected by it. friends; family; and anyone who has heard about it really. but, it strikes us in different ways. i mean, the older person had a full life. and it was expected of them to pass soon. But Tim was only 22. he had his full life ahead of him. it was completely disgusting what happened. i get sick to my stomach hearing and reading about it. which i do. a LOT. When i hear about the shit thats going on in iraq, my heart sinks. its absolutely horrific. BUT to me, its (more) expected because of what is going on down there. which is ridiculous. But how many times do a young man get decapitated on a bus here in canada? you know? its heartbreaking. Has anyone read the updates on this murder that steph posted?

Yes, it certainly is subjective. People are more affected by the death of people close to them, then those in close proximity, and less so as people become more distant. People are also more disturbed when a death occurs through mysterious and uncontrollable circumstances, and that they can become a victim of. For instance, people will be far more disturbed by a death caused by someone planting a bomb in a store in their neighborhood than by someone getting hit by lightning. (However, an American won't be as disturbed by a civilian getting blown up by a bomb in a store overseas.)No one posting in this thread knows the guy who was murdered on the bus, or has any kind of relationship with him. He is as unknown to them as a the victim of a violent gang killing in Los Angeles.--------------@Ashley:I'm not sure why you're comparing the death of someone from old age with that of a younger person violently dispatched, but I would think you'd feel worse if your grandmother passed away (if you were close to here) rather than the man who died on the bus. It's commendable that you feel for the deceased and their families, but regarding the deaths of people you don't know, who you feel bad for has a lot to do with who the media chooses to cover. In the U.S., when a cute little white girl is abducted or murdered, it seems to be a much bigger deal than if it happens to a black child or a homely child.Speaking of LA, the politicians are all happy because the murder rate is down. Fewer than 100 people were killed there in July. Let's celebrate...?

you are so... unique.
-
no no no youre not getting what im saying. if both of those people were close to you, if would affect you greater if the person died more tragically. thats what i mean.you ask why i was comparing the two. its the same as comparing it to iraq, really. siiigh. =( i read that and i got a bit sick to my stomach.

I still don't understand why you brought it up. The subject of the thread is someone you don't know, and then I discussed the emotional impact his violent death has versus the violent death of other people you don't know.Canada has a big lumber industry. I guarantee you that people who harvest trees and work in sawmills regularly die gruesome deaths.

I can't do both. But if I do try to explain, it looks like I'll have to be very, very direct. All I can say about the victim (with whom you seem to be on a first-name basis) is that his death is very sad. It's too bad that people's minds sometimes snap and they do terrible things to other people. Even in Canada.

Quote: Also, a newspaper in Portage la Prairie Wednesday declined to allow the animal rights organization PETA to purchase an ad that compared the horrific slaying of Mr. McLean to the treatment of slaughter animals. The ad described an innocent victim's throat being cut, his cries for help ignored and his flesh eaten: “It's still going on,” said the ad.The newspaper said it would not publish the ad for reasons of taste.wtf
-
PETA is saying about the slaughter of animals for food what I was saying about other people. I was saying that the life of a person killed in gang violence is as valuable as that of the guy on on they bus. They are saying that the life of an animal is as valuable as the life of a person, and that it's violent killing is a tragedy in either case.PETA uses explicit photographs of animals being slaughtered in their ads. It would be fair to call that manipulative. It depends on your point of view.

Quote:They are saying that the life of an animal is as valuable as the life of a person, and that it's violent killing is a tragedy in either case. Yeah.. I guess you're right.. I feel bad for those animals being killed..I really do. Look at all the money spent to save animals.. I bet all that money could have been spent on curing cancer.. Or saving humans.
-
Fuck PETA.
-
Actually, not that much money is being used to save animals. Most of it goes to animal shelters.
-
PETA tends to be rather extremist, but are you against their stand for ethical treatment of animals?
