Steve, do you ever let anything go?

Fair or unfair? The Schiavo case
-
In reply to:Steve, do you ever let anything go?Whuddya mean? I thought stick-to-it-ive-ness was an American virtue.By the way, it looks like all legal options have ended. Appeals will be made again to the Florida and U.S. Supreme Courts, but they will be rejected.7 evidentiary hearings, 20 judges, 30 appeals...that's a lot of due process.Damien, if you don't want this kind of thing to happen to you, I suggest you write a living will, and desingnate someoe to make decisions for you on your behalf. Make sure the documents conform to the reqirements of your state, and keep them up-to-date. Then you can stay on life support until your body disintegrates, if that is your wish.
-
That last comment wasn't necessary.
-
In reply to:Well, many of us think that there is more than just a body 'there'. That's why we believe her body should be allowed to stay alive.I assumed you meant for this to apply to yourself as well. OK, strike "Damien" from the post and replace with "Everyone who lives in the U.S."In reply to:He wants her dead because he knows as long as she is alive he and his girlfriend can never be married. You state this as if it's a well-known fact. I think Michael Schiavo would want to have some words with you if he were posting here.In reply to:If these things are emotionally charged, is that any worse than speaking of all this in completely technical/medical/clinical terms, thereby stripping it of any emotion?Almost all the discussion I've seen is based on emotion. It's nice to sometimes go beyond "You're wrong!" "No, you're wrong!".In reply to:Hopefully, if there is a next time, decisions won't be made in the heat of the moment, but will have been well thought out before hand. The heat of the moment? This case has been going on for many years! If you mean that it's too bad that Terri didn't leave a written directive but should have, then I agree. In reply to:But I appreciate your analytical posts. That was not a sarcastic comment. In reply to:Just wanted the othere position to be put out there. No one is stopping you. Just because some people disagree with you, it doesn't mean that they don't want to hear what you say. It's good to hear all points of view.

I do not know that terri is suffering, I see it that the FAMILY is suffering by watching her die so slowly...My sister says that bleeding to death would be a nice way to go. Just drift off to sleep...odd, and she only knows because she hemoraged with her son, and lost ALOT of blood, but felt no pain because of it, but it was HORRIBLE to watch, and think we could lose her...but she would have went in peace, our problem was never that she was suffering, but the blatant fear of losing her...
-
Is it not possible for the doctor's to make her 'comfortable' during her last hours/days? Although she may be MPO to an extent, that doesn't mean she can't have morphine, or demerol...does it?
-
oh, I must disagree there. The same part of the brain that keeps the heart going is responsible for a lot of sensations. Reflexes, jumping when you hear a bang, recoiling from pain.I admit that what I've read on the topic might be out of date but I still don't want her to suffer!
-
yes, but are they directly connected to each other? cuz if person is paralyzed from the neck down, and can feel no pain on their lower body parts...doesn't mean their heart stops beating.
-
fair. she didnt have any brain waves. its sad to let someone die, but i think its better to let her die than live in this state for much longer. 15 years is long enough.
-
wasn't it 21 years? or something like that. either way..really long time, specially with no progress? I think only the body remains...
-
I (mostly) aggree! I will never know if she sufferd, I just hope that she didn't. If she was a dog or cat, she would have been put out of her misery years ago. Isn't it funny that humans don't get that benifit?
-
We should have a thread on euthanasia. It's a complex and difficult issue, morally and ethically. And there's the issue of whether doctors should have any involvement in it. It's completely illegal in the U.S., but still, sometimes doctors will prescribe sedatives, with the knowledge that the patient will swallow the whole bottle in one sitting.

yes it is

From the Miami Herald, Saturday, 26 March:
In reply to:
Hours after a judge ordered that Terri Schiavo was not to be removed from her hospice, a team of state agents was ''en route'' to seize her and have her feeding tube reinserted -- but the agents stopped short when local police told them they intended to enforce the judge's order, The Herald has learned.
Agents of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement told police in Pinellas Park, the small town where Schiavo lies at Hospice House Woodside, on Thursday that they were on the way to take her to a hospital to resume her feeding.
For a brief period, local police, who have officers at the hospice to keep protesters out, prepared for what sources called ``a showdown.''
In the end, the squad from the FDLE and the Department of Children & Families backed down, apparently concerned about confronting local police outside the hospice.
''We told them that unless they had the judge with them when they came, they were not going to get in,'' said a source with the local police.
''The FDLE called to say they were en route to the scene,'' said an official with the city police who requested anonymity. ``When the sheriff's department and our department told them they could not enforce their order, they backed off.''
So Governor Jeb Bush sent state agents to seize Terri Schiavo. I wonder why this story didn't get wider publicity.

Well all, sad to say she has passed
-
thank god....lets move on.
-
Michael Schiavo and his family have been getting lots of written and telephoned death threats from the folks "who don't blow things up". Someone was arrested last week for trying to put a contract on Michael Schiavo's life. The domestic terrorists who bomb abortion clinics and murder doctors are at it again.Michael Schiavo will not be able to move on any time soon.
-
Didn't his associate blow up an abortion clinic in Alabama? Hasn't he advocated violence? Would it be unfair to call him a domestic terrorist? And how could this country send someone like Tom Delay to congress, and then give him a leadership position?
-
I bet when the autopsy comes back inconclusive(that is my guess), that there will be more threats on Michael Shiavo...really sad. People who think he is the violent one, will themselves commit violence...pathetic hypocrits.
-
If the autopsy comes back inconclusive, I'll have to say I was completely wrong. But, given the CT scan results, that would be almost miraculous.
But have you noticed how violent a lot of "moralistic" folks can be? What do you think might really be motivating them?
